English I - 1st/3rd
After working on vocabulary for 5 minutes and reading for 10, students will review Ethos, Logos, and Pathos as a class. They will analyze a series of examples and then move around the room to indicate which rhetorical device is being used in the example. We will then go on to read Martin Luther King Jr's "I Have a Dream" speech. We will stop at every paragraph to discuss what it is MLK is sharing with his audience. Once we have completed a few paragraphs, students will work alone or with a partner to analyze the rest.
English I Honors - 2nd
Once students have had time to work with their vocabulary words/read silently, they will get into groups of 3 to read the selection "Preparedness 101: Zombie Apocalypse". These groups will then become their communities. Students will be given a letter from the CDC indicating that a Zombie Virus has broken out across America and that there is a limited number of vaccines left. As a group, they will write a letter to the CDC using 1 rhetorical appeal (Ethos, Logos, and Pathos) as well as 2 persuasive techniques to get the CDC to give them the vaccine. They will also be asked to write a short story as a group detailing how their community survives within the zombie outbreak. Each student has been given a character that they have to write as within the letter and story. They will have until the end of class to complete their assignment.
