After warm-ups, students in 1st and 4th period will begin the class by looking at the focus objectives for the week and identifying: 1- what they already know; 2- what they think they need to learn; 3- why they believe that objective is important. They will then work in their Houses to read through the Close Read/First Look section of their textbook. This will show students what a Close Read/First Look entails. As a House, they will be asked to identify what a Close Read is, the purpose of a Close Read, and how to complete a First Look. They will list their answers on a post-it poster that will then be displayed around the room for others to see.
From there, they will complete a "Lost At Sea" activity that asks them to critically think about the importance that should be placed on certain survival items. This will help introduce students to the "Survival" unit that we will be beginning in class. Finally, with whatever time remains, we will begin reading "The Seventh Man" Haruki Murakami.
Students in 3rd period will be introduced to the "Level Up" activity. This will be an assignment that students work on each day over the course of the week in class. They will have different levels of increasing intensity in which they will complete an assignment related to the focus objectives for the week. Students will be asked to work both individually and in small collaborative settings over the course of the week to complete their tasks.
